Autoweek reports that researchers at Siemens, in Germany, are developing a new breaking technology known as the Electronic Wedge Brake (EWB). EWB has the potential to revolutionize braking standards and significantly increase the reponsivness of car brakes and shorten the distance required for a car to fully brake and come to a complete stop. The key behind the system is the use of kinetic energy to power the brakes. Thus the faster the car is traveling, the more energy is built up to power the brakes and the strong they are. We could see these brakes on some European cars (Audi, BMW or Porsche) as early as the 2008 model year.
