On November 14, 2006, Stephen Colbert was interviewing clothing company Timberland’s CEO Jeffery Shwartz. The subject of the dedication/ground breaking of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington came up and Shwartz asked Colbert if he saw it. Colbert, in character, replied that he there and was Tommy Hilfiger’s guest. This, I believe was in reference to the old urban myth about Tommy Hilfiger being on the Oprah Winfrey Show and made racist remarks.

So for those who are still unware – the whole thing was a hoax.
