ministrelsy and black face rising again?
Rashod Ollison, writing in the Baltimore Sun, examines the very recent emergence of references to certain racial stereotypes of African Americans within hip-hop:
These ubiquitous urban hits seem to whistle in a disturbing sub-trend in hip-hop. Free of irony or tongue-in-cheek cleverness, so-called “minstrel rap” appears to be a throwback to the days when performers (some [...]

fujiya & miyagi come to north america
Hate Something Beautiful has tuned me into near-electroclash group Fujiya & Miyagi – who have the most Japanese name of a non-Japanese group. Their bio references a sound that comes out of a love for sumo wrestlers, seventies krautrock and electronic from the early nineties. This British duo’s first full length album, Transparent Things, was [...]

bad air for the beijing games?
Jeff Brooke writes for The Globe and Mail about looming issue of Beijing’s notorious poor air quality and its effect on Olympic athletes in the 2008 Olympiad. Beijing’s air is essentially toxic and there is a permanent brown cloud that hangs in the air, which gets worse in the summer with the humidity.
They [Chinese officials] [...]

snazzy pictures + food = my mom’s recipes and more
I came across My Mom’s Recipes and More, an Israeli food blog run by Haifa resident Chanit. The blog combines snazzy pictures, taken by Chanit, with recipes, stories about food and probably a little bit of chutzpah.

oh yes, tommy hilfiger and oprah
On November 14, 2006, Stephen Colbert was interviewing clothing company Timberland’s CEO Jeffery Shwartz. The subject of the dedication/ground breaking of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington came up and Shwartz asked Colbert if he saw it. Colbert, in character, replied that he there and was Tommy Hilfiger’s guest. This, I believe was [...]

someone tell sam jackson he’s my bro
A bit of an oldie on youtube – this parody and song video by DCLugi, takes U2’s Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own and makes it into an ode to Samuel L. Jackson. The Bono impression not half bad too (and this is coming from someone who has met the man).

the afghanistan museum returning to afghanistan
The Afghanistan Museum in Excile, located in Switzerland, is closing up shop and moving its colleciton to Kabul.
The museum in exile is in the village of Bubendorf, 20 kilometres outside Basel. It was established by Swiss scholar Paul Bucherer-Dietschi in 1999, to house artefacts from war-torn Afghanistan.
But politics quickly intervened, and initial plans to [...]

the kgb file on andrei sakharov
There were 568 KGM file volumes on Andrei Sakharov (Nobel prize winner, activist and nuclear scientist). All 568 files were destroyed in 1989. Memos of those files survived, however, and formed the contents of the book The KGB Files of Andrei Sakharov, by Joshua Rubenstein and Alexander Gribanov (eds.) in 2005. Read the CIA (yes [...]

nuclear by canada
Paul Webster writes in The Walrus Magazine about the future of the CANDU (Canadian Deutrim Uranium) nuclear reactor, sold by Atomic Canada.
But on the international stage Canadian nuclear technology developed a dubious reputation: the candu, as it turned out, seemed to be the choice of dictatorial regimes and was shunned by most democracies. Authoritarian rulers [...]

the czech economy
More important, the absence of an effective government precludes efforts aimed at reining in mandatory social welfare spending and thus preventing continued pressure on discretionary spending. Without rationalisation of entitlement programmes, further expenditure cuts would be necessary in areas vital to long-term economic growth—including infrastructure and research and development—to meet the convergence programme’s fiscal targets [...]

how the rich countries can best help the poor
Act against corrupt leaders, assisting research and development and enhancing global labour mobility – these are the ways in which rich and developed nations can best assist poor countries. So says this essay in Foreign Affairs Magazine.
Increasing aid and market access for poor countries makes sense but will not do that much good. Wealthy nations [...]

comic look hotel room
This is the “Comic” room in the Arte Luise Kunsthotel in Berlin. The hotel is, shall we say, the hotel of the moment. Each room was the touch of a different designer. This room looks like a cartoon cell. Hop over to the hotel’s site and check out some of the other rooms, like “Loop” [...]
