Tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims seem to be rising on a global scale. I would admit that I am somewhat baffled by this. To that end, I am left wondering what the differences are and how they might create a climate of tension.

As I understand it, the differences are traced back to a conflict over who Muhammad’s successor as caliph, the leader of Islam would be. Sunnis believe that Muhammad’s companion Abu Bakr, who became the caliph, is the true successor, whereas the Shiites believe that the position should have gone to Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali and that his descendants, the 12 imams were to follow. There are, of course, more differences, a notable divide is that Shias believe that Islamic Law can be modified and updated based on new interpretations, where Sunnis hold that Islamic Law has been codified and not open to change or interpretation.

As to the conflicting tensions? I will chalk that up to human nature.
